The scribes of Muhammad were 42 in number. `Abdallah Ibn Sarh al-`Amiri was one of them, and he was the first Quraishite among those who wrote in Mecca before he turned away from Islam. He started saying, "I used to direct Muhammad wherever I willed. He would dictate to me 'Most High, All-Wise', and I would write down 'All-Wise' only. Then he would say, 'Yes it is all the same'. On a certain occasion he said, 'Write such and such', but I wrote 'Write' only, and he said, 'Write whatever you like.'" So when this scribe exposed Muhammad, he wrote in the Qur'an, "And who does greater evil than he who forges against God a lie, or says, 'To me it has been revealed', when naught has been revealed to him." So on the day Muhammad conquered Mecca, he commanded his scribe to be killed. But the scribe fled to `Uthman Ibn `Affan, because `Uthman was his foster brother (his mother suckled `Uthman). `Uthman, therefore, kept him away from Muhammad. After the people calmed down, `Uthman brought the scribe to Muhammad and sought protection for him. Muhammad kept silent for a long time, after which he said yes. When `Uthman had left, Muhammad said "I only kept silent so that you (the people) should kill him."

Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah [5326] says:

Mughira b. Shu‘ba reported: When I came to Najran, they (the Christians of Najran) asked me: You read "O sister of Harun" in the Qur'an, whereas Moses was born much before Jesus. When I came back to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) I asked him about that, whereupon he said: "#The(#people_of_the_old_age)#used_to_give_names (to their persons)#after_the_names_of_Apostles_and_pious_persons_who_had_gone_before_them."

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: I have been commanded to celebrate festival ('Id) on the day of sacrifice, which Allah, Most High, has appointed for this community. A man said: If I do not find except a she-goat or a she-camel borrowed for milk or other benefits, should I sacrifice it? He said: No, but you should clip your hair , and nails, trim your moustaches, and shave your pubes. This is all your sacrifice in the eyes of Allah, Most High. Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 130 Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When the dead body (of a Muslim) is buried in the grave there appear before him two Angels, both having black faces and blue eyes. One is called Munkar and the other is called Nakir and they say: Say what you have to say about this person and he will say: He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger and they both will say: We already knew that you would say this. Then his grave will be expanded to the extent of 4900 square cubic feet and it will be illuminated, then it will be said to him: Go to sleep and he will say: I intend to go to my family in order to inform them and they would say: Go to sleep like the sleep of a newly wedded bride whom no one awakens but one who is dearest to her amongst his family members. Only Allah would resurrect him from his resting place. If he (the dead) were a hypocrite he will say: I heard people making a statement (pertaining to the oneness of Allah and the apostlehood of Muhammad) and I said the same but I do not know. And they would say: We already knew that you would say this and the earth will be told to press him and it will press him till his ribs are clasped together and he will not be relieved of the torment till Allah resurrects him from his

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 184 Narrated byMu'adh ibn Jabal

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Verily Satan is the wolf of a man just as the wolf is (the enemy) of a flock. He seizes the solitary sheep going astray from the flock or going aside from the flock. So avoid the branching paths; it is essential for you to remain along with the community.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 174 Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar ; Anas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Follow the great mass for he who keeps himself away from it in fact will be thrown in Hell Fire.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 139 Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When the dead body is buried in the grave the person is made to sit in his grave without entertaining any fear or agitation in his mind then it is said (to him): Which (religion) did you profess. He would say: I had been (the follower) of Islam. It would be said to him: Who is this man? He would say: He is Muhammad (Messenger of Allah) who came to us with clear signs from Allah. We testified him. It would be said to him: Have you seen Allah. He would say: It is not (within the reach of men) to see Allah. Then an opening would be made for him towards the Hell Fire and he would see parts of it consuming other parts. It would be said to him: Look towards that from which Allah saved you. Then an opening would be made for him towards the Paradise and he would cast a glance at its freshness and what it contains. It would be said to him. This is your abode, because of your firm faith which you had, on which you died and your would be resurrected (in the same condition) if Allah so wills. The evil person would be made to sit in the grave in fear and anxiety. It would be said to him: What was your religion? He would say: I do not know. It would be said to him: Who is this person? He would say: I heard people saying something which I said. Then opening would be made for him towards Paradise and he would see its freshness and what it contains. It would be said to him: Cast a glance at that which Allah has withheld from thee. Then an opening would be made towards the Hell Fire and he would look at it (and find) some parts of it consuming the other. It would be said to him: That is your abode because of your scepticism which you had and on which you died and if Allah, Exalted, so wills you will be resurrected on it.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 122 Narrated byUbayy ibn Ka'b

In regard to the words of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, "Your Lord brought forth their offspring from the loins of the children of Adam." (7:172) Ubayy said: He gathered them and paired them then fashioned them and endowed them with the power of speech and they began to speak. He then made an agreement and covenant with them. He made them bear witness about themselves (saying) Am I not your Lord. They said: Yes. He said: I call to witness seven heavens and seven earths regarding you and I call witness your father Adam regarding you lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: We do not know this. Bear this in mind that there is no god besides Me and there is no Lord besides Me and do not associate anything with Me. It is I Who should be sending to you My messengers in order to remind you My agreement and My covenant and it is I who would send you My Books. They said: We bear witness to the fact that Thou art our Lord, Thou art our Object of worship. There is no Lord besides Thee and there is no object of worship besides Thee. They confirmed this (pledge). Adam was raised above them so that he would see them and he saw the rich and the poor, those having handsome faces and even those inferior to them and he said: My Lord, why is it that Thou hast not made Thy servants alike? He said: I wish that I should be thanked. And he also saw the Prophets, some amongst them like lamps with light in them, distinguished by another covenant regarding messengership and prophethood, viz. the words of the Blessed and the High: And when We made covenant with the prophets - up to His words: Jesus son of Mary (33:7). He was among those spirits and He sent him to Mary (peace be upon both of them). And it is narrated by Ubayy that he entered by her mouth.

Narated by:Malik related to me from Safiyy, The mawla of Ibn Aflah that Abus-Saib, the mawla of Hisham ibn Zuhra said, "I went to Abu Said al-Khudri and found him praying. I sat to wait for him until he finished the prayer. I heard a movement under a bed in his room, and it was a snake. I stood up to kill it, and Abu Said gestured to me to sit. When he was finished he pointed to a room in the house and said, 'Do you see this room?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'There was a young boy in it who had just got married. He went out with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to al-Khandaq, (the ditch which the muslims dug in the 5th year of the Hijra to defend Madina against the Quraysh and their allies). When he was there, the youth came and asked his permission, saying, "Messenger of Allah. Give me permission to return to my family." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave him permission and said, "Take your weapons with you, for I fear the Banu Quraydha tribe. They may harm you." The youth went to his family and found his wife standing between the two doors. He lifted his spear to stab her as jealousy had been aroused in him. She said, "Don't be hasty until you go in and see what is in your house." He entered and found a snake coiled up on his bed. He transfixed it with his spear and then went out with it and pitched it into the house. The snake stirred on the end of the spear and the youth fell dead. No one knew which of them died first, the snake or the youth. That was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, "There are satan in Madina who have become muslim. When you see one of them, call out to it for three days. If it appears after that, then kill it, for it is a shaytan." '

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said“The World is the Prison of the Believer (Muslim's) and Heaven for the Kafir” -Sahih Muslim:  Hadith No.2956
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When the believer is dying, the angels of mercy come to him with white silk and say: ‘Come out content and with the pleasure of Allaah upon you to the mercy of Allaah, fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry.’ So it comes out like the best fragrance of musk. They pass him from one to another until they bring him to the gate of heaven, where they say: ‘How good is this fragrance that has come to you from the earth!’ Then the souls of the believers come to him and they rejoice more over him than any one of you rejoices when his absent loved one comes to him. They ask him: ‘What happened to So and so, what happened to So and so?’ They say: ‘Let him be, for he was in the hardship of the world. When he says, ‘Did he not come here?’ They say: ‘He was taken to the pit (of Hell).’ When the kaafir is dying, the angers of punishment come to him with sackcloth and say: ‘Come out discontent and subject to divine wrath to the punishment of Allaah. So it comes out like the foulest stench of a corpse. They bring him to the gates of the earth, where they say: ‘How foul is this stench!’ Then they bring him to the souls of the kuffaar.” Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 1833; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 2758.
Narrated by Ummu Hani asked the Prophet (pbuh) such a question one day: “Will we be able to see and meet each other after we are dead?”. The Prophet (pbuh) replied: “ The spirit becomes a bird which feeds on the fruit of Paradise. On the Resurrection day, each spirit penetrates into their own body”(A. b. Hanbal. Musnad. v. VI, p. 425; A Sirajuddin, ibid, p. 106-107.)

Narrated Anas bin Malik : Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) said, "When (Allah's - سبحانہ و تعا لی) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, 'What you used to say about this person (i.e. Prophet Muhammad - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم - by showing his picture)?' The faithful Believer will say, 'I testify that he is Allah's ( سبحانہ و تعا لی) 'Abd' and His Apostle -صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ).' Then they will say to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah ( سبحانہ و تعا لی) has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' So he will see both his places." (Qatada said, "We were informed that his grave would be made spacious." Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;) Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, "What did you use to say about this man." He will reply, "I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say." So they will say to him, "Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance." Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings. (Bukhari - Volume 2, Book 23, number 456).

It was narrated that al-Bara’ (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for the funeral of a man from among the Ansaar. We came to the grave and when (the deceased) was placed in the lahd, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sat down and we sat around him, as if there were birds on our heads (i.e., quiet and still). In his hand he had a stick with which he was scratching the ground. Then he raised his head and said, “Seek refuge with Allaah from the torment of the grave”, two or three times. Then he said, “When the believing slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him from heaven angels with white faces like the sun, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. They bring with them shrouds from Paradise and perfumes from Paradise. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, and he says, ‘O good soul, come forth to forgiveness from Allaah and His pleasure.’ Then it comes out easily like a drop of water from the the mouth of a waterskin. When he seizes it, they do not leave it in his hand for an instant before they take it and put it in that shroud with that perfume, and there comes from it a fragrance like the finest musk on the face of the earth. Then they ascend and they do not pass by any group of angels but they say, ‘Who is this good soul?’ and they say, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so, calling him by the best names by which he was known in this world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened to them and it is opened, and (the soul) is welcomed and accompanied to the next heaven by those who are closest to Allaah, until they reach the seventh heaven. Then Allaah says: ‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon in the seventh heaven, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I will return them and from it I will bring them forth once again.’ So his soul is returned to his body and there come to him two angels who make him sit up and they say to him, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He says, ‘Allaah.’ They say, ‘What is your religion?’ He says, ‘My religion is Islam.’ They say, ‘Who is this man who was sent among you?’ He says, ‘He is the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).’ They say, ‘What did you do?’ He says, ‘I read the Book of Allaah and I believed in it.’ Then a voice calls out from heaven, ‘My slave has spoken the truth, so prepare for him a bed from Paradise and clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a gate to Paradise.’ Then there comes to him some of its fragrance, and his grave is made wide, as far as he can see. Then there comes to him a man with a handsome face and handsome clothes, and a good fragrance, who says, ‘Receive the glad tidings that will bring you joy this day.’ He says, ‘Who are you? Your face is a face which brings glad tidings.’ He says, ‘I am your righteous deeds.’ He says, ‘O Lord, hasten the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.’ But when the disbelieving slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him from heaven angels with black faces, bringing sackcloth, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, and he says, ‘O evil soul, come forth to the wrath of Allaah and His anger.’ Then his soul disperses inside his body, then comes out cutting the veins and nerves, like a skewer passing through wet wool. When he seizes it, they do not leave it in his hand for an instant before they take it and put it in that sackcloth, and there comes from it a stench like the foulest stench of a dead body on the face of the earth. Then they ascend and they do not pass by any group of angels but they say, ‘Who is this evil soul?’ and they say, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so, calling him by the worst names by which he was known in this world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened to them and it is not opened.” Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited (interpretation of the meaning):

“for them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle”

[al-A’raaf 7:40]

He said: “Then Allaah says, ‘Record the book of My slave in Sijjeen in the lowest earth, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I will return them and from it I will bring them forth once again.’ So his soul is cast down.” Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited the verse (interpretation of the meaning):

“and whoever assigns partners to Allaah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place”

[al-Hajj 22:31]

He said: “Then his soul is returned to his body, and there come to him two angels who make him sit up and they say to him, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He says, ‘Oh, oh, I don’t know.’ They say, ‘What is your religion?’ He says, ‘Oh, oh, I don’t know.’ Then a voice calls out from heaven, ‘Prepare for him a bed from Hell and clothe him from Hell, and open for him a gate to Hell.’ Then there comes to him some of its heat and hot winds, and his grave is constricted and compresses him until his ribs interlock. Then there comes to him a man with an ugly face and ugly clothes, and a foul stench, who says, ‘Receive the bad news, this is the day that you were promised.’ He says, ‘Who are you? Your face is a face which forebodes evil.’ He says, ‘I am your evil deeds.’ He says, ‘O Lord, do not let the Hour come, do not let the Hour come.’”

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4753; Ahmad, 18063 – this version was narrated by him. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1676.

The correct view is that the two angels will only question the deceased in his grave about matters of Tawheed (monotheism) and ‘aqeedah (belief). This is quite clear.

And Allaah knows best.

Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 9/328

Thirdly:

With regard to the questions that the angels will ask in the grave, this is explained clearly in the following hadeeth:

It was narrated that al-Bara’ (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for the funeral of a man from among the Ansaar. We came to the grave and when (the deceased) was placed in the lahd, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sat down and we sat around him, as if there were birds on our heads (i.e., quiet and still). Narrated By Masruq: 'Aisha said that a Jewess came to her and mentioned the punishment in the grave, saying to her, "May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave." 'Aisha then asked Allah's Apostle about the punishment of the grave. He said, "Ye
Fadalah bin 'Ubaid (RA) reported that The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "The actions of every dead person come to a halt with his death except the one who is on the frontier in Allah's way (i.e., observing Ribat). This latter's deeds will be made to go on increasing for him till the Day of Resurrection, and he will be secure from the trials in the grave." [Sunan Tirmidhs, (there is) punishment in the grave." 'Aisha added, "After that I never saw Allah's Apostle but seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment in the grave in every prayer he prayed." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 23, Hadith #454]

i (4/165) No. 1621 and Sunan Abu Dawud (3/9) No. 2500]

Salman (RA) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) as saying, "Observing Ribat in the way of Allah for a day and a night is far better than observing Saum (fasting) for a whole month and standing in Salat (prayer) in all its nights. If a person dies (while performing this duty), he will go on receiving his reward for his meritorious deeds perpetually, and he will be saved from Al-Fattan." [Sahih Muslim (3/1520) No. 1913]

Narrated By Ibn Abbas: The Prophet once passed by two graves, and those two persons (in the graves) were being tortured. He said, "They are being tortured not for a great thing (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other was going about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). He then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree split it into two pieces and fixed one on each grave. The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Why have you done so?" He replied, "I hope that their punishment may be lessened till they (the leaf) become dry." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 23, Hadith #443]

The grave is the first stopping over
-and if it is pleasant, what will come after it will be pleasant
-and vice versa

It was narrated that Hani' the freed slave of 'Uthman bin 'Affan, said: "When 'Uthman bin 'Affan stood beside a grave, he would weep until his beard became wet. It was said to him: 'You remember Paradise and Hell, and you do not weep, but you weep for this?' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. Whoever is delivered from it, what comes after it is easier. If he is not delivered from it, then what comes after it is harder."' He said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "I have never seen any horrible scene but the grave is more horrible." [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/553) No. 2308 and Sunan Ibn Majah (5/333) No. 4267]

Abu Sa'eed narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) entered his Musalla and saw the people who looked as if they were smiling. So he said: 'Indeed, if you were to increase in remembrance of the severer of pleasures, then you would find yourselves too busy for what I see. So increase in remembrance of death, the severer of pleasures. For indeed there is no day that comes upon the grave except that it speaks, saying: "I am thee house of the estranged, I am the house of the solitude, I am the house of dust, and I am the house of the worm-eaten." When the believing worshipper is buried, the grave says to him: "Welcome, make yourself comfortable. Indeed, to me, you are the most beloved of those who walked upon me. Since you have been entrusted to me and delivered to me today, you shall see what I have arranged for you." It will then widen for him so that his sight extends, and the door to Paradise is opened for him. And when the wicked worshipper or the disbeliever is buried , the grave says to him: "You are not welcome, do not get comfortable. Indeed, to me, you are the most hated of those who walked upon me. Since you have been entrusted to me and delivered to me today, you shall see what I have arranged for you.'" He said: 'It will begin closing in on him (squeezing him) until his ribs are crushing each other.'" He said: " The Messenger of Allah (SAW) clasped some of his fingers between others and said: 'Seventy giant serpents will constrict him, if even one of them were to hiss on the earth, nothing upon it would grow as long as it remained. They will chew on him and bite him until he is brought to the Reckoning.'" He said: " The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'The grave is but a garden from the gardens of Paradise, or a pit from the pits of the Fire.'" [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/639) No. 2460]

Ali (RA) narrated: We did not cease to doubt punishment in the grave till the surah was revealed: Your rivalry in the accumulation of wealth diverts your minds. (102:1 etc.) [Sunan Tirmidhi (Vol. 5 pg. 447) No. 3355]

If something is mentioned in the Qur'an you are not allowed to doubt it
-so we are not allowed to doubt in the punishment of the grave

So Allah saved him from the evils that they plotted (against him), while an evil torment encompassed Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people. (Ghafir 40:45)

The Fire; they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon, and on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): "Cause Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!" (Ghafir 40:46)

Ibn Kathir said in his tafseer for (Ghafir 40:45-46) - "This Ayah contains one of the major proofs used by the Ahlus-Sunnah to prove that there will be torment in the grave during the period of Al-Barzakh"

WHAT DID THE 4 GREAT IMAMS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE PUNISHMENT OF THE GRAVE?

THE AFFIRMATION OF THE PUNISHMENT OF THE GRAVE
Abu Hanifa said: Anyone who says "I do not acknowledge the punishment of the grave" then he is of the Jahmiyyah the losers, i.e. those who deny Allah's Names and Attributes. He is of the Jahmiyyah because he denies Allah's statement: ...We shall punish them twice, and thereafter they shall be brought back to a great (horrible) torment. (At-Tawbah 9:101). Also he's guilty of denying Allah's words: And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment (i.e. the torment in this world and in their graves) before this, but most of them know not. (At-Tur 52:47). This ayah is referring to the punishment of the grave. And if he says: I believe in the ayah but not its interpretation then he becomes an infidel because some verses of the Qur'an are self-explanatory and stands in no need of an interpretation. Hence the verse explains itself. Therefore if anyone denies any of these verses that are self-explanatory he becomes a kaafir.
On the authority of Abu Hanifa who heard from al-Minhaal ibn Amru who narrated from Ibn Abbas (RA) who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) has said: The worst of my Ummah are those who claim I will be going to Paradise but definitely not the Hell-fire. [Abu Hanifah, al-Fiqh al-Akbar (pg. 137)]

Abu Hanifa used to make takfir on people
-who used to doubt in the punishment of the grave
-The Jahmiyya deny the punishment of the grave

...We shall punish them twice, and thereafter they shall be brought back to a great (horrible) torment. (At-Tawbah 9:101)

حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الصاغاني، ثنا أبو نوح، أنبأ شعبة عن قتادة في قوله: سنعذبهم مرتين قال: عذاب القبر وعذاب النار
On the authority of Qataada who said: Allah's words, "...We shall punish them twice..." (Surah 9:101) means the punishment of the grave then the torment of the Hell-fire.
[Tafseer Ibn Abi Hatim (6/1870) No. 10304]

حدثنا القاسم قال، حدثنا الحسين قال، حدثني حجاج، عن ابن جريج قال: عذاب الدنيا، وعذاب القبر، = ثم يردون إلى عذاب النار
On the authority of Ibn Jareej who said: The ayah of Surah Taubah 9:101 means they shall receive a punishment in the dunya then in their graves and a final punishment in the Hell-fire. [Tafseer at-Tabari (14/444) No. 17133]

Imaam ash-Shafiee(d.204H)(rh) said: "Indeed al-Qadr (predestination): both the good and evil consequences are from Allaah -the Mighty and Majestic. Indeed Punishment of the Grave is a true fact, the questioning of those in the graves is a true fact, the Resurrection is a true fact, the Accountability is a true fact, Paradise and Hellfire are true facts. Whatever else is related in the Sunnah and so mentioned by the scholars and their followers throughout the lands of the Muslims is also true" (Manaaqibush-Shafiee(1/415) of al-Bayhaqee)

وقال المروذي قال: لنا أبو عبد الله عذاب القبر حق ما ينكره إلا ضال مضل
Murwadhi says: Abu 'Abdullah (Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (Allah have mercy on him)) told us; "The punishment of the grave is haqq and none deny it except a person who is deviated and one who deviates." [Tabaqat al-Hanabilah (1/62)]

Imaam Ahmad (d.241H)(rh) said: "From the essential Sunnah ,which if a person leaves anyone of its points-not accepting it and not having emaan in it-then he will not be from its people are: (he then mentions ) emaan in the Punishment of the Grave"(Usoolus-Sunnah(no.8) of Imaam Ahmad.) He also said: "Punishment of the Grave is a true fact. The servant will be questioned about his Religion and his Lord. Munkir and Nakeer and Paradise and Hellfire are also true facts" (Risaalatus-Sunnah(p.72) of Imaam Ahmad.)

Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab wrote the book 'Usool Thalatha'
-and he got this from the 3 questions we will be asked in the grave

-It is your natural instinct to fear serpents
-when Musa (a.s) threw the stick and it became a snake he ran away without looking back
-think about being in the grave with all those serpents biting you

حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الصاغاني، ثنا أبو نوح، أنبأ شعبة عن قتادة في قوله: سنعذبهم مرتين قال: عذاب القبر وعذاب النار
On the authority of Qataada who said: Allah's words, "...We shall punish them twice..." (Surah 9:101) means the punishment of the grave then the torment of the Hell-fire.
[Tafseer Ibn Abi Hatim (6/1870) No. 10304]
Satan ties knots in your head while you sleep -- Sahih Buhari--   Volume 4, Book 54, Number 491:

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "During your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you, and he breathes the following words at each knot, 'The night is, long, so keep on sleeping,' If that person wakes up and celebrates the praises of Allah, then one knot is undone, and when he performs ablution the second knot is undone, and when he prays, all the knots are undone, and he gets up in the morning lively and gay, otherwise he gets up dull and gloomy. And even if We had sent down to you, [O Muhammad], a written scripture on a page and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would say, "This is not but obvious magic."(Quran 6:7)

Narrated By Al-Bara' ibn Azib: I met my uncle who was carrying a standard. I asked him: 'Where are you going?' He said: 'The Apostle of Allah (SAW) has sent me to a man who has married his father's wife. He has ordered me to cut off his head and take his property.' Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said : " Remember the destroyer of pleasures-death, for not a day passes upon the grave except it says ‘ I am the house of remoteness; I am the house of loneliness; I am the house of soil; I am the house of worms’ " ( Authentic-Thermithi).
